US Rep. Louis Gomert, R-Tyler, said the tests were positive for the new coronavirus, in an interview with East Texas Now where he speculated he might have contracted the virus by wearing his mask.
Gohmert, who spends much time on the U.S. House floor without a mask, was one of several Texas officials set to fly to West Texas this afternoon with President Donald Trump. He did one test, he was positive, then he did a second one during pre-examination in the White House which was also positive.
An overwhelming majority of doctors and doctors recommend wearing masks as a way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Recent research indicates that masks can protect their wearers from severe symptoms of COVID-19 or from completely catching the virus.
Gomert, 66, was among a number of legislators who participated in a hearing of the House Judicial Committee held on Tuesday. He was wandering around the hearing room and outside without wearing a mask. His diagnostic news was first reported by Politico and later confirmed by ABC News.
“I am good. I feel good. He said,“ I am completely asymptomatic. ”If I had not gone with the president, because I did not feel bad, I would never have known.
Gohmert said he had received directions from White House doctors and the treating physician on the Capitol who only needed to self-stone for 10 days. He said he will return to his home in East Texas and that all of his employees are being tested for the virus.
Just as Dorothy said, there is no place like home, Gohmert said.
The Republican lawmaker has been known to speak at length with his colleagues on the Capitol while not adhering to the Social Divergence Guidelines. Last month, he told CNN he was not wearing a mask because he was being regularly checked for the virus.
"I do not have the coronavirus, it became clear until yesterday that I had never had it," he said in June. "But if you got it, you wouldn't see me without a mask."
In a Wednesday morning tweet, American Rep. Jerry Nadler, from New York, who chaired Tuesday's session, wished Jumert a "full and speedy recovery".
He wrote: "When individuals refuse to take precautions, it puts everyone at risk. I have regularly directed all members to wear their masks and I hope this is a lesson from all of my colleagues."
