Legendary Georgetown manager John Thompson Jr. dies at the age of 78
The legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson, known as "Big John" in college basketball, has passed away at the age of 78.
Thompson, who led Georgetown to the 1984 National Championship, built the program into a juggernaut, taking Hoyas to three finals in the 1980s while also winning seven titles in the Great East and leading the United States national team in 1988 to a bronze medal in the Olympics.
"We are deeply saddened to share the news of the death of our father, John Thompson, Jr.," the Thompson family said in a statement released by Georgetown. “Our father was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to developing youth not only on the basketball court, but most of all. He is respected as the historical sponsor of the sport, and above all dedicated to the well-being of his community.
"However, for us, his greatest legacy remains as a father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. More than a coach, he was our foundation. More than just a myth, the voice was in our ears every day. We will miss him but he is based on the confidence that we carry his faith and determination in us. Forever by his strength, courage, wisdom and boldness, as well as his unwavering love.
“We know that many will miss him tremendously and that our family appreciates your condolences and prayers. But don't worry about him, because as he always liked to say,“ Big Ace is wonderful.
