"You really stole something? You stole bread and cheese and smashed a shelf?"
The boy replied shyly, with his head bowed:
Yes.
Judge: "Why did you steal?"
Boy: "Wanted" "I need"
Judge: Couldn't you have bought it instead of stealing it?
Boy: I had no money.
Judge: You could have asked your parents for money.
Boy: I only have my mother who is sick, who is in bed and has no work.. for her sake I stole bread and cheese.
Judge: And you. Don't you do anything? Don't you have a job?
Boy: I worked as a car wash. I took a day off to help my mother, which is why they fired me.
After the conversation with the boy ended, the judge announced the verdict:
“Theft, especially the theft of bread, is a very shameful crime.
We are all responsible for this crime of theft. Today, everyone present in this room, including myself, is responsible for this crime of theft.”
Thus, everyone in attendance, each person will be fined ten dollars, and no one will leave the hall without paying the ten dollars.”
The judge took out a $10 note from his pocket, took a pen and began to write:
“In addition, I ordered a $1,000 fine for the shop owner who delivered the starving boy to the police, and if the fine was not paid in one hour, the shop would remain closed.”
Everyone in the hall apologized to the boy and handed him the full amount. The judge came out of the courtroom, trying to hide his tears.
After the audience heard the referee's decision, their eyes welled up with tears.
The judge added: “If someone is caught stealing bread, then all the residents and society in this country should be ashamed.”
